Aloha, Bible Study Hui!
In Deuteronomy, Moses reviews for the Israelites the story of their journey from Mount Horeb (another name for Mount Sinai) and repeats the law God has given them. More than a bear repetition, Moses's extended speech in Deuteronomy stresses the Israelites' need to obey God's law once they settle in the promised land. Faithful obedience to God's covenant will bring blessing and prosperity; Disobedience--especially in forms of idolatry, intermingling with Canaanites, and social injustice--will bring disaster and dispossession.
Moses teaches Israel about the roles of priests and judges, warns them of the limits on power that their future kings must respect, and tells them to look to God to raise up a prophet like him. He repeats God's blessing for obedience and curses for disobedience and leads the people in renewing the covenant. Moses dies on Mount Nebo, seeing the promised land from its summit.
